|aThe scene for van Manen's Black Cake is a society party. Elegantly-dressed couples dance with each other and his choreography reveals a whole range of undercurrents in the relationships between the men and women. In the finale, the party-goers succumb to the influence of alcohol and all pretence of sophisticated decorum crumbles. Danced to music by Tchaikovsky, Janáček, Stravinsky, Mascagni and Massenet, the ballet includes some wonderfully funny sequences. Recorded under studio conditions.
