|aFlying south for the winter, a swallow alights on a statue of the Happy Prince, but sees that the prince is not joyful at all -- he is crying for the poor people of his city. The statue asks the little bird to strip away the gold and jewels that adorn him and to distribute them to the needy. Th vain little swallow must now choose between his flight to the warm south and the task that will test his devotion.
